Bruce Goudy, Partner, Ernst & Young, Toronto
Bruce is an indirect tax partner at Ernst & Young based in Toronto. He has 22 years of experience advising and assisting clients globally on issues involving GST/HST and provincial sales taxes, with a focus on retail, distribution, manufacturing and technology clients. In addition, he develops ideas and leads projects to secure overpayments of taxes and assists clients with identifying risks, managing their indirect taxes, and negotiating reduced tax assessments. Bruce is a contributing editor to Ernst & Young’s Complete Guide to the Goods and Services Tax. He is frequent speaker on indirect tax issues, and worked closely with clients as they developed their HST implementation and now post-implementation processes. Today Bruce will share examples from those experiences, outline key risk areas with managing the many rules of harmonized sales tax and offer practical solutions.

MARY ANNE MCMAHON, LLB is a national advisor with Ernst & Young in Ottawa, where she is the Leader of Ernst & Young’s indirect tax practice in that office. Mary Anne coordinates and provides national advice on indirect tax matters including GST/HST, excise and customs duty, provincial taxes, and softwood lumber. A lawyer, she is a member of Couzin Taylor LLP, a law firm associated with Ernst & Young. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, Mary Anne enjoyed a career of more than 30 years with Justice Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency. As a General Counsel with the Legal Services Branch of the CRA she led the indirect tax practice in that office, served as a legal advisor to the Minister of National Revenue, the Commissioner of Revenue and senior CRA officials, and served as Legal Counsel to the CRA Board of Management. Mary Anne is the associate editor of the CICA’s Commodity Tax News.
