Our professors encouraged us to sign up with our idea. Our main motivation was that we thought that once people read our idea during the first round of the contest that they would believe in it as well; that they would be inspired to become greener and more sustainable. We told ourselves that if only one person would adapt our concept into his/her company, this would already be a win for us.
Kym Parent: Last year, I travelled to Peru on a humanitarian trip and I built a medical center for the small community of San Ramon. I would like to use a part of this prize money for another humanitarian trip and have the chance to help out another community. As well, I would like to pay off a part of my student debt.
Camille Stewart: If our team wins, I would like to use this money to finance my humanitarian trip to Guatemala next April and to help pay for my university studies.
We felt that our idea had the potential to make a big difference in reducing the amount of waste that businesses and other institutions currently dispose of.
A primary objective of ours would be to pay off our school debt with the prize money we receive.
During our sustainability class our professor talked about the challenge and encouraged our class to sign up. After hearing about it, our team was immediately interested because we really enjoyed working together on school projects and wanted to get involved in sustainable business beyond the classroom.
Rebecca: If our team won I would use the money towards my tuition.
Jennifer: I am going on exchange in September 2013, and would use the prize money to enhance the experience in to something that is life-changing.
As students with a passion for environmental sustainability, we are always looking for innovative ways to help people make greener choices. The Walmart Green Student Challenge was the perfect opportunity for us to make our idea a reality. Given the environmental impact and business practicality of EcoSense, we felt that this was an opportunity for us to partner with a global business leader such as Walmart to make an impact in lives of millions of people.
We will use the prize money to support the development of EcoSense, with the goal of developing a functioning and comprehensive mobile platform that can truly make a real difference across the world.
Canada Green Lawn Care was already in planning when we were introduced to the Green Student Challenge by the Business faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University. Our plan already fit perfectly into the guidelines of the competition, and it was an excellent venue to advance and showcase our new venture.
If Canada Green Lawn Care wins the competition, the money will be used to accelerate the growth of the business. In the future, we plan to expand past the Kitchener-Waterloo region, and become a real competitor to other large lawn care companies. With the money, we will be able to finance a more comprehensive marketing campaign with the goal of purchasing an additional vehicle, more machinery, and employing additional members to the Canada Green team.
